Limits on the TeV flux of diffuse gamma rays as measured with the HEGRA air shower array HEGRA Collaboration

چکیده
Using data from the HEGRA air shower array, taken in the period from April 1998 to March 2000, upper limits on the ratio Iγ/ICR of the diffuse photon flux Iγ to the hadronic cosmic ray flux ICR are determined for the energy region 20 TeV to 100 TeV. The analysis uses a gamma-hadron discrimination which is based on differences in the development of photonand hadron-induced air showers after the shower maximum. A method which is sensitive only to the non-isotropic component of the diffuse photon flux yields an upper limit of Iγ/ICR (at 54 TeV) < 2.0×10 −3 (at the 90% confidence level) for a sky region near the inner galaxy (20◦ < galactic longitude < 60◦ and |galactic latitude| < 5◦). A method which is sensitive to both the isotropic and the non-isotropic component yields global upper limits of Iγ/ICR (at 31 TeV) < 1.2 × 10 −2 and Iγ/ICR (at 53 TeV) < 1.4 × 10 −2 (at the 90% confidence level).

Search for TeV Counterparts of Gamma-Ray Bursts with the HEGRA Experiment
The HEGRA experiment is an air shower detector system for the study of neutral and charged cosmic rays in the energy range between 500 GeV to 10 PeV. Here we give an overview of how the HEGRA detector is used to search for TeV γradiation associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) registered with the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. متن کامل50 Tev Hegra Sources and Infrared Radiation
The recent observations of 50 TeV gamma radiation by HEGRA have the potential of determining the extragalactic flux of infrared radiation. The fact that radiation is observed in the range between 30 and 100 TeV sets an upper limit on the infrared flux, while a cutoff at Eγ ≈ 50 TeV fixes this flux with a good accuracy. If the intrinsic radiation is produced due to interaction of high energy pro...

The energy spectrum of the Blazar type galaxy Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) as measured by the High-Energy-Gamma-Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) air Cerenkov telescopes extends beyond 16 TeV and constitutes the most energetic photons observed from an extragalactic object. A fraction of the emitted spectrum is possibly absorbed in interactions with low energy photons of the diffuse extragalactic infrared radiat...

Blazars with redshifts z ≤ 0.1 are likely candidates for detection at energies in the range 300 GeV – 50 TeV withČerenkov telescopes and scintillator arrays. We present γ-ray flux predictions for a sample of 15 nearby flat-spectrum radio sources fitting the proton blazar model of Mannheim (1993a) to their observed broad-band spectral energy distributions. At high energies, we use fluxes or flux...
متن کاملFlux Upper Limits of Diffuse TeV Gamma Rays from the Galactic Plane Using the Effective Area of the Tibet-II and III Arrays
We obtained new upper limits on the diffuse gamma rays from the inner Galactic (IG) and outer Galactic (OG) planes in 3-10 TeV region, using the Tibet air shower data and new Monte Carlo simulation results. A difference of the effective area of the air-shower array for observing gamma rays and cosmic rays was carefully taken into account in this analysis, resulting in that the flux upper limits...
